Kambeo Hubs was an initiative to bring companies onto our platform and provide them with all the necessary resources to create their social impact program.

Project Context

Kambeo Hubs allows companies to pair up with non profits on our platform to create a social impact program. Nonprofits benefit from the resources of the company, while the company gets to share transparent data about their giving program publicly on their page.

My Impact

The successful launch of Kambeo Hubs was a major contributing factor to the company securing an additional round of investor funding, as well as securing recurring revenue from the new customers that signed up to use the program.

Hubs Case Study

Overview

When we launched Kambeo, most of our existing customers were nonprofits and charities. Soon after launching, we started looking into what our platform could offer companies and how we could expand the platform into the corporate space.

We found that with growing demand for corporate transparency, more and more companies are seeing the value in implementing Corporate Social Responsibility programs within their organizations. With an abundance of nonprofits and charities on our platform, we found that we were in a unique position to connect nonprofits with companies. Our objective then became to find a way in which we could leverage our product to provide a CSR solution for companies.

The OPPORTUNITY

How can we help companies communicate to the public how they’re giving back in their communities?

With increasing scrutiny from the public, companies need a way to communicate how they’re positively impacting society.

Research Methods

User Research

We did some secondary research to gauge how important CSR programs were amongst the public and what the demand was for companies.

88% of people say it’s no longer acceptable for companies just to make money, but that they must impact society positively as well.

69% of people say they won’t work for a company that doesn’t have a strong sense of purpose.

77% of consumers say they are motivated to purchase from companies with a strong sense of purpose.

Research Methods

Competitive Analysis

We found most CSR platforms offered similar functionality such as providing donation matching and corporate volunteering solutions for their customers. There was however no solution on the market to offer companies a brandable page with verifiable data on what their organization is doing. This would be our unique selling point and would set us apart from the competition.

Since launching the first version of Kambeo hubs, we’ve gone back and added donation matching to our platform to match our competitors.

Research Methods

Key Research Insights

We worked with our project managers to determine what a successful corporate social responsibility tool on our platform would look like.

CSR Reporting
Companies need a communication tool to spread the word about what they’re doing in their communities. We can leverage existing data on our platform to provide assurance to the public that companies are doing what they say they are.

Employee Engagement
We need a way to inspire and engage a company's employees to want to give back. This creates a mutually beneficial relationship between nonprofits and corporations on our platform.

Brand Integration
Our solution will need to integrate seamlessly with a company's existing website, but also exist as a part of Kambeo. Allowing companies to apply their own branding will give us a huge advantage.

IDEATION PHASE

Hubs Explorations

When we started exploring design concepts for Kambeo hubs, we knew we wanted a company’s hub page to act on its own as a microsite, but it also had to exist within our platform as well. Finding a balance between these two worlds was our primary challenge throughout the design process.

We also spent a lot of time exploring the designs for the homepage of a company's hub. Some of our designs were focused more on search and discover, where others were more focused on telling a company’s CSR story. This was another area where we had to work to find a balance

Final Design

Introducing Kambeo Hubs

The final design for Kambeo hubs acts as a microsite for a company that can service all of their CSR needs. As a company's employees get involved with nonprofits on Kambeo, the company can then display metrics on their page that are fully verifiable. This helps to create an accurate and transparent picture of how the company is giving back.

We decided to give companies the option to build a home page that works best for them. Admins can use drag and drop components as building blocks to customize their page, giving them the option to tell their CSR story in a way that works for them. Employees can explore events and volunteer opportunities from partnered charities via the tabs along the top. Each hub is fully brandable, allowing for a seamless experience with any company’s existing website.

A company hubs page acts as both an informational page about their CSR inititatives, as well as a hub for employees to get involved within their community.
Companies can partner up with the nonprofits they contribute to and share that information on their page.
We designed the hub pages to be fully brandable to integrate seamlessly with a companies existing website.

Challenges

One problem we found after launching was that companies weren’t taking the time to properly set up and brand their pages. We’re currently ideating design solutions to provide the user with more guidance while setting their page up.

Some of these ideas include using modals after the page is created to let users know what they can do, and implementing better empty states on components. You can see the design updates we hope to implement in the next release below.

We're currently working to implemented a more user guided experience for setting up their hubs page.

Conclusion

Reflection & Outcomes

The launch of Kambeo Hubs was a success with a number of customers signing up within the first few months of launching. These companies are currently live and can be viewed on the Kambeo platform. We also had additional companies sign up for our Kambeo pilot program.

I learned a lot about creating design systems for with a high degree of user customization with this project. Designing something that was rigid enough to always function properly but flexible enough to allow companies to apply their branding was an interesting challenge. I think our final solution was successful in achieving a good balance between the two. I also learned a lot about collecting feedback from customers and implementing that feedback into the product.
